A major custodian of realty assets

March 19, 2014 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

A major custodian of realty assets, the Department of National Defence (DND) holds a large number of properties all across the country to support the Canadian Forces, including over 20,000 buildings, 2 million hectares of land, 5,000 kilometres of roads, and 3,000 kilometres of water, storm, and sewer pipes.

The Department of National Defense uses two major assessment tools to determine the adequacy of designs in meeting its green building requirements: LEED Green Building Rating System and the Green Globes Design Eco-Rating Program. The goal of the Green Globes program is to identify opportunities to save energy and water, reduce waste, and prevent water, air and land pollution in the management and operation of these new buildings. DND’s design performance goal is to build to a minimum score of three out of five globes and to a minimum of LEED Silver. “The Department of National Defense in Canada is doing its part to conserve water by changing how it designs, constructs, and operates its buildings,” said Chris Thompson, Greyter Systems Chief Technology Officer. As part of this mandate, Greyter Systems smart water solution’s technology was selected to reclaim rainwater so that it can be treated and used flushing the facilities toilets.
